DC Action is sad to hear about what happened at Casa Ruby—addressing the unique needs of youth experiencing homelessness who identify as LGBTQ+ is a matter of equity as they represent  34% of all unaccompanied youth surveyed in DC’s 2019 Youth Count Survey.

Not only are LGBTQ+ youth at higher risk of homelessness in DC, but they also face more significant risks of hardship among all young people experiencing homelessness–including higher rates of assault, trauma, exchanging sex for basic needs, and early death.

We call on the District to be thoughtful with their investments to serve this population and urge the Department of Human Services to develop a plan to replace the vacant beds due to the CASA Ruby closure and not to exacerbate existing gaps.
