Headshot of Matthew Hanson

What a thrill it is to welcome Mat Hanson to the DC Action for Children team!

As Chief of Staff, Mat will work with me to help grow the organization and build power among our constituents. He will provide leadership and management of staff, execution of the organization’s strategic plan, and ensure racial justice and equity is fully integrated into the work at every level.

Mat has spent more than a decade working to promote economic, racial and social justice. He joins DC Action for Children after serving as the DC Director for the Working Families Party, a national organization that unites activists, community and labor organizations to advance systemic change. During his time there, he used electoral, political and legislative strategies that concentrated on increasing economic security for low-income families and bringing greater fairness and equity to our elections. He helped oversee large and small teams, developed and set organizational strategy as well as organized and built winning coalitions that united advocates, business owners, faith leaders, policy experts, unions and other allies. These efforts have resulted in policy changes that have successfully raised statewide minimum wages for more than half a million workers in Maryland and Washington, DC, passed and implemented one of the most progressive public financing of elections programs in the country, and helped secure funding for early childhood education and health programs.

He has worked at the local, national and international level. A graduate from the City University of New York, he is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, a proud father, and Ward 7 resident.

****Many of you may have worked with Mat for years, but I bet you didn’t know these fun facts about him. Enjoy!

What’s your favorite DC spot?

Anywhere green. I love to get out and hike. Near our home, that often means exploring the Fort Davis and Fort Dupont parks with my son or taking him for long walks along the Anacostia River. They’re absolutely beautiful and the perfect escapes when we need a little break. My son has a lot of fun when we spot deer, fox and even wild turkey.

What’s your favorite genre of music to work to?

It depends on the work. If I need to concentrate, usually jazz, Thelonious Monk in particular. If I need to pump myself up, or something to shake up my thinking, it’s usually punk rock or my guilty pleasure, eighties pop.

As a child, what did you say you were going to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher. I had some wonderful ones growing up that really changed my life. I can’t imagine where I would be without them and inspired me to do what I do today.

What’s your favorite app?

Google Podcasts. I’m an early riser and usually start my day over a nice cup of coffee and some podcasts while my family is still asleep. I mainly listen to news and political podcasts but I enjoy anything that has a good story to tell.

Here’s the clincher…food cuisine you just can’t do without?

Mexican. I’m a vegetarian and I love to cook so we make a lot of it at home, and I can’t get enough of it. Tacos, tamales, tlacoyos are my favorites.

Help us give Mat Hanson a warm welcome. We’re so excited to have him on board!
